system restart applet fails in jaunty

Bug Description
After an update using Update manager the System Restart Required notification appears. Clicking on the applet opens the usual system restart dialog, but clicking on the Restart Now button has no effect except that the dialog box closes. The system does not terminate.
Restarting from the Switcher menu works as normal.
