Can't empty trash

Bug Description

I deleted a directory in Mozilla Thunderbird. It showed up in trash. But, when I try to empty trash, but it keeps showing up. Individual email messages are purged, but the deleted directory continues to appear in trash no matter how many times I purge trash. When I click on the deleted directory to show its contents, Thunderbird says the directory doesn't exists -- like a mirage. If it's any help, the directory had a one-letter name ("r").

Kubuntu 8.04: the Hardy Heron Release
KDE 3.5.10
Thunderbird 2.0.0.18 (20081125)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The version of Ubuntu you are using
2. The version of Thunderbird you are using
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behaviour you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

This is not a thunderbird issue. please open a bug against gnome(maybe gnome-trash if possibile). If you cd into the trash dir. and remove it from terminal it should delete it.

John,

This anomaly happens in Thunderbird on Windows, too. The "ghost"
directory keeps re-appearing, even though I empty the trash in
Thunderbird many times. Using FileZilla, I looked at the directories
under the mail directory. It simply does not show up.....so it can't be
deleted. Plus, it's Kubuntu Linux; so it's KDE, not gnome.

Brian

Please file this bug upstream since it seems to be thunderbird's bug not
Ubuntu's bug.
Please also upgrade to latest 2.0.0.19 release from our archives for
Linux and from Mozilla for windows. Please dont bring up what works or
doesnt work in Windows since the code is not even close to the same.

Please answer the following:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter
the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behaviour you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Are you talking about thunderbirds trash folder? Mine works fine in
Intrepid and Jaunty thunderbird 2.0.0.19 and 3.0.
Please try to use a new profile, rename ~/.mozilla-thunderbird and restart.

Let's see if I manage to report it the right way. I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.22, and Ubuntu 9.04. Everytime I open Thunderbird, some empty folders are automatically created inside the Thunderbird trash. No matter I empty trash, next time I open thunderbird they will get recreated. If I click on any of the folders in the trash, I get the message (translated from Spanish): "Current operation failed. Mail server responded: Mailbox does not exist or must be suscribed to". This problem happens since my mailbox was completely emptyed in the server.
Hope this is complete enough.

Please use a new profile and set up one of the emails you see this on but only 1 and see if you can reproduce this.

Yes, I'm using IMAP, and I just see the problem on one email. My current profile only has one account.

If you can please set up a POP address and see if you can reproduce
this. I have a feeling its one of those IMAP only bugs

I did some tests with a POP address and I was not able to reproduce. The problem is that I don't remember how I got to this situation. It may have to do with having folders with the same name in & outside trash, but I'm not sure...

I finally solved the problem:

1. Empty trash
2. Right-click on trash -> Subscribe
3. Expand INBOX->Trash and uncheck the "unremovable folders"
4. Restart Thunderbird
