Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

If I right click on an emoticon and select "add to customised emoticons" I cannot use it. It displays the text but not the image. If I go to the "manage customised emoticons" they are not there. It's like the emoticons are not saved.

I'm using Intrepid.

apt-cache policy pidgin
pidgin:
  Instalados: 1:2.5.2-0ubuntu1
  Candidato: 1:2.5.2-0ubuntu1
  Tabla de versión:
 *** 1:2.5.2-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Note: My system is in Spanish, so I don't know if the words in quote marks are the exact ones in the English version.

Thanks for taking the time to submit your bug in order to help improve Ubuntu.

I have added custom emoticons, the only issue I have is that it seems as though Yahoo IM doesn't support the option. In hotmail ***Shudders*** and gmail accounts I am able to select the emoticons, from an area below the included ones. How are you adding them? Can please try to list it step by step to determine whether or not this is truly a bug?

Here are the steps I used:

1. Download emoticon: wget http://icons.iconator.com/152/ICONATOR_b103a9dac40851e62725b522f7ed0414.gif

2. In pigeon open a gmail buddy, Click on Smile!.

3. Click on Manage Custom Smilies.

4. Click Add, and enter your smiley shortcut, in the upper right you can click on the polaroid photo and browse to the .gif you earlier pulled down, click add.

5. Click Close, you should now be able to once again click on Smile! This time you should see additional emoticons in separated from the default but now available to select.

Were you using .gif files? Maybe the time of image you selected wasn't supported either?

Chris

Thanks for the answer. The way I tried to save them is described in the bug description. The person I was talking with (on MSN) used a custom smiley which I wanted to have, so I right clicked on it and selected the option to save it as a custom smiley. A dialog popped up with the emoticon and the text I should type to use it in a conversation. I tried it but the image was not displayed.

However the emoticon doesn't appear in the list of custom smileys or the area you mention in 5.

I will check next time and see what type of img file it was.

I saw that if I tried to save the image (right-click on the emoticon), the files didn't have an extension and there was a message saying that the file type was not recognised and that it would be converted to PNG. But they actually are not saved to the folder where I saved them to, they went to my home folder.

I tried adding the Ubuntu animated image you gave me and it worked (I used the menu to see all my emoticons and then managed my custom ones). The funny thing is that after this, adding emoticons (used in the conversation) began working.

I got non-animated emoticons added this way and they work. However when I used an animated one my boyfriend saw it without animation and he said it had been like 1/4 of the image was displayed. Then I tried saving and using another animated emoticon and he didn't see anything (just white) and I saw the emoticon but it was not animated. Could it be that others can't see these emoticons because they've been saved to the wrong folder?

he only saw 1/4 of the image, because that is the only static part of that animation.

all animations need to be .gif, and the one you right-click-save is converted to .png by default.

always do it manually for expected result. this now works for me.

thank you :)

Thanks for the info. I think pidgin should take care of this so that users can use this functionality properly.

I'm a bit busy atm. I will answer those questions later this week. I will try to reproduce it in jaunty (clean install).

I just checked this out. This bug is fixed as it now adds the emoticon to the customised emoticon list, however when I type them or select them they are static. Also the person who saw them saw them static and one of them was displayed partially (not the whole image). I will submit another bug report for this or try to find if someone has already reported this.
