No Idea update manager is doing lots of updates on new install of Ubuntu 8.10 (note 4th install today and all failed on 2 different computers)

Bug Description
Becoming very despondent with Ubuntu. Have used Lindows and Linspire for years with no problems but as it is no longer supported I am changing all my computers to Ubuntu. However, after today I may give up.
