Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

This is very annoying bug with the tree view in the side pane.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open up nautilus, and in the side pane, select "Tree". In the following instructions, "on the left" means the tree, and "on the right" means the icon view on the right.
2. Click on "File System" on the left, and on the right, double-click on var, cache, apt, then archives (this is just an example).
3. On the left, collapse (click the triangle next to) var.
4. On the left, click on "File System" again.
5. On the right, double-click on var, cache, apt, then archives. You will notice that the tree on the left doesn't expand as you go into directories anymore, unlike the first time.
6. On the left, expand var.
7. Great! Now try to click on directories on the left. They don't respond!

Sometimes at the end, I would have one directory on the left permanently selected, and if I click on other directories, there would be two directories selected at once!

Confirmed for me on Ubuntu 9.04, package version: 1:2.26.2-0ubuntu2
Arch: AMD64

It is a low priority bug, but it is annoying !

I found two workarounds:
 1) Close the nautilus window and open another window...
 2) Close the tree view (click on the small cross), then display it again, using F9 or via the menu window:
view->lateral panel (I'm using the french translation, so it is: Affichage->Panneau latéral)

I'm not able to reproduce this any more using Ubuntu Maverick. The tree still doesn't expand automatically in step 5, but selecting other directories in step 7 now works fine for me.

I am not able to reproduce this in 10.04 LTS either, exact same behavior as Robert indicates.

Ubuntu 8.10 is EOL now and 9.04 will be in a few months. I think it's reasonable to say this won't get fixed for 9.04 now so I will mark it as wontfix - I'd suggest 8.10 or 9.04 users upgrade to 9.10 or 10.04 LTS to address this or use the workaround mentioned earlier.
