Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

Since KDE 4.2b2 KRunner and the Kickoff menu have problems displaying a list of elements.

TEST CASE:
1. Alt-F2 to start krunner. The window looks fine.
2. Type "ama". KRunner completes this and draws a bigger window, which is totally broken (only the frame/border is present).
3. Typing "amarok" to the end and pressing Enter starts Amarok. So the functionality is still there.. only the display is not working correctly.

This is the same with the Kickoff menu window, but this just appears as a black box with transparent background (without being drawn correctly before, like with KRunner, before you type anything).

See the attached screenshots.

WORKAROUND:
The drawing problem in krunner can be fixed by enabling desktop effects. This does not fix the Kickoff menu though, but you can switch to "Classic Menu Style" (when right-clicking the Kickoff icon).

Where did you get the nvidia driver update from? There's only 180.11 in Ubuntu repos as far as I can see.
I could not even find any 180.x drivers on the nvidia driver download site (but that might be "expected"?!)

I think there's a high likelihood that this is a bug with the nvidia driver.

Yesterdays Xorg upgrade in Ubuntu fixed my problem, I now have a flicker free experience in Firefox

Xorg version 1:7.4~5ubuntu9

The Xorg update didn't fix the problem for me. From the comments, it looks like all of you are using the nvidia proprietary driver. I'm using the NV driver.

Carybielenberg, that (flicker in FF) is in fact another bug. The flickering in Firefox has been an Xorg issue that's now being fixed.

In KDE 4.2 RC1 (as of now in Jaunty), even the plasma panel does not get displayed properly (but only its borders), when not using desktop effects!

I'm having the same problem. Mine affects the Quick Access as well. I have found that if you play with the border (click/resize) that you can get the rest to show. I am full updated as of 1/15/09 @ 2:19 EST. No compositing enabled in KDE nor X. I am running the NV driver on an old GeForce2 GTS. I have let xorg make my settings and xorg.conf is empty. I have attached my X log in case it helps.

I should add that my plasma panel is working/displaying fine. Also the 'Notes' plasmoid is transparent rather then having a yellow bg. (Though this may very well be unrelated.)

I'm closing this as "Fix released", since it's fixed for me now: everything gets displayed properly with desktop effects disabled, too.
Apparently the recent rebuilds against current libplasma-dev have fixed this?

Please re-open in case you are still having the problem in a up-to-date Jaunty install and provide more information then.

I'm still having problems with the Kmenu, it still only shows the borders. Krunner works fine.

I have fetched all the updates that are available to me, and restarted the X server a few times but no luck.

I am still having the problem for most everything that pops up on the bar as well as krunner. I stopped KDM, did a fresh full-upgrade at 10:10 am EST 1/20/09, and removed all the files from my /home before rebooting. The plasmoids on the desktop are working correctly and I believe that issue for me was unrelated to this bug and is now resolved. So again in summery, kmenu, Quick Access, and Device Notifier only show the border of there window until they are resized. Krunner shows correctly at the start but can switch to showing just border as things are typed in. I will be happy to include any needed information.

Regarding the Device Notifier please be advised I may have simply looking at a white background when I opened it the first time giving the appearance that it was transparent.
