Could you please explain what happens if the computer shuts down? Is it a "normal" shutdown?
Is there anything interesting in the logs regarding this? What happens if you swap to another console if it shuts down? Does it never happen if you only use the shell? Does it shut down if you have to log in in gdm? Thanks!

Try starting Ubuntu in recovery mode and wait until it shuts down. Then you should see a message, why it's going to shut down.
And if it is no "normal" shutdown, could you explain it a bit better? Is it like you pull out the electricity cable of a computer?

i have the same issue, it is not a normal shutdown, it is like pulling the power cable from a computer. when it happens it is a little random, sometimes it will shutdown at the loading splash screen, sometimes at the login screen, but most of the time within a minute of getting to the desktop.

i have tried multiple distributions including Ubuntu 8.10/9.04 Alpha 5, OpenSUSE 11, Elive 1.9.22, Mint, and OpenGEU, all of these have the same problem, most of them i couldn't even load the live CD.

what seems to work is Ubuntu 7.04, FreeBSD, Windows XP, and Gentoo, all of them work solid, but they do not work for what i need.

the laptop is a Toshiba M35x-S109

I believe this is a duplicate of Bug #242400 (already resolved).

Does updating the BIOS resolve the problem?

RichardWarwick, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Hardy Desktop reached EOL on May 12, 2011.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Is this an issue in a supported release? If so, could you please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 312951
