no sound on my HP laptop

I have every thing else working on my HP laptop (just installed ubuntu 8.10) but I can't seem to get my speakers to work with any sound at all.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Just by chance:
Does it help to set PCM in "alsamixer -Dhw" to 80 and unmute the channel if necessary with the key M?
