Bug Description

I've had strange problems with package updates and installations ever since I started the auto-update process on a fresh Wubi installation, and my computer crashed before completion. I've tried clearing the dpkg cache several times and redownloading the entire batch, as well as 'sudo dpkg --configure -a', but it always ends in this error or similar (previously it was something about the list file 'missing final newline', which apparently means that it's corrupt binary sludge).

Reassigning to dpkg, seeing lots of the following in DpkgTerminalLog.gz:

"dpkg: serious warning: files list file for package . . . missing, assuming package has no files currently installed."
