Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdenetwork

I am currently testing krdc in Ubuntu Hardy and Intrepid.

Hardy comes with krdc 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu1 and Intrepid comes with krdc 4:4.1.2-0ubuntu4

The newer version does not compress the vnc stream when you select "low quality" as well as the older version. The older version would strip away colors and allow a faster control of a remote computer. This has been removed in version krdc 4:4.1.2-0ubuntu4 . If I connect it still uses full colors and lagsmore than if I use 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu1.

According to upstream it could possibly be an issue with LibVNCClient and certain VNC servers.

I am using vino 2.24.1-0ubuntu1 as the server on ubuntu 8.10. This is included with ubuntu and is accessible through System > Preferences > Remote Desktop

libvncclient is not a valid package name, please provide the package name to see which version I am running.
libvncserver is not currently installed on the machine.

I thought it could not be due to the server since, when connecting with krdc 3.5, I am able to get lower quality and in turn faster screen refresh. Keep in mind when I say "lower quality" I mean that some colors are stripped away. On the same server, when using krdc 4.5, selecting the "low quality" option does not show the show the screen with stripped colors.

To give Jonathan the benefit of the doubt, I tested to see if it was the server was the issue I booted from the ubuntu 8.04.1 Live CD and started the vino VNC server (2.22.2-0ubuntu1). To my surprise, I actually got "low quality", not as in stripped colors but, more pixelated. Reaction time was fast and I had no loss of colors.

Assigning bug to vino package to see what changes in quality options were made between 2.22.2-0ubuntu1 and 2.24.1-0ubuntu1.

I'm just parroting the KRDC dev's comment in the upstream bug I linked to this report: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=166675 ;-)

The libvncserver0 binary package provides both the client and server libs, btw.

Running the following combination allows compression through pixelation (instead of through color stripping).

vino 2.26.0-0ubuntu1
krdc 4:4.2.1-0ubuntu1

I think we can close this since the issue was with the vino server.
