Bug Description

Smolt is developed to collect hardware profiles from end users in a opt-in method. It was originally written for Fedora and now also supports SuSE, Debian and Ubuntu. Support for Archlinux, Frugalware, Mythvantage, and Crux is in the support queue. It should be compatible with any system that uses HAL. Developers are encouraged to port it and make it available in other Linux distributions and operating systems. We will be happy to coordinate changes and merge any patches.

Thank you for taking time to report this bug. The package "smolt" was already requested to be added to Debian, so I added a bugwatch for it.

I'm the owner of the smolt ITP in Debian. I just wrote to the bug report there the current status and how I think we should move forward. If possible, please keep discussion there; I do not check LaunchPad at all regularly.

I heard that there was some talk about integrating hardware profiles into launchpad. It would be nice if this work was implemented so that it was at least somewhat compatible with smolt.

Are there Ubuntu's Smolt packages or not? I find link to http://xyzz.kexik.net/node/12 at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smolt_%28Linux%29), Smolt Wiki (http://smolts.org/smolt-wiki/Main_Page) and this bug/wish too but target page doesn't exist. Do you know anything about this matter?

I've packaged the latest 1.4.3 release into my PPA, it's not perfect, but it works.

As seems your packages works well - http://www.smolts.org/client/show/pub_ca11fdb4-ef19-49e9-b713-d4465729e5f0. Great. Thanks a lot.

Fresh install Kubuntu 11.04,
files pci.ids and usb ids is not in /usr/share/hwdata (as smolt expected) but in /usr/share/misc/
workaround: ln -s /usr/share/misc/ /usr/share/hwdata

As a game developer, knowing the typical hardware available of potential end users is critical. A hardware database would allow me a rough survey of the average minimal capabilities I could expect of my end users. As many others have already mentioned, the current Ubuntu hardware database is not really usable. Smolt offers an attractive solution from what I understand of it.
