Bug Description

Hardware: Targa Traveller 826 (I maintain the LaptopTesting page for that one)
S/W: Kubuntu Dapper Flight 3 i386 - Install CD

When installing, I have to use the "irqpoll" kernel boot option in order to prevent a severe failure during kernel initialisation and to get USB working.

In former releases, up to and including Dapper Flight 2, the installer carried over all additional options from the CDs boot menu into grubs menu.lst. Therefore, grubs menu.lst would contain the "irqpoll" option for all kernels to be booted.

This doesn't happen with Dapper Flight 3 anymore, no additional options get added to the kernel parameters listed in grub's menu.lst. Logically, once the system is installed, the kernel will be run without that option, effectively disabling USB on my machine.

The Install CD would not even boot without the "irqpoll" option. Fortunately, the installed system does boot ok, but I think I just got lucky.

The installer should integrate all kernel boot parameters the user added during installation if they are necessary for a smooth system startup.

The code that copies kernel parameters from the first boot to the
installed GRUB configuration hasn't changed in a long time.

Could you please attach /var/log/installer/syslog?

I got the some problem (need irqpoll and pci=routeirq, new grub config doesn't include it) with Flight 5 (Flight 6 won't boot).

I don't have ubuntu on my lappy's hard drive anymore. LiveCD seems to be ok now. USB now works without specifying the irqpoll option.

Sascha, can you test Beta-2 or flight 7 please?

I have also the same Problem with Dapper Flight 6. It boot but after an update of the Kernel to .2.6.15-22 the parameter vga=normal which let me switch to the console with strg+alt+f(1-6) in a X11 session will not be in the menu.lst. It is not copied.

Colin Watson (cjwatson) wrote :

Marc: Firstly, vga=normal is now an exception; it is intentionally no longer copied by request of the laptop team, since it's too easy to select in the graphical boot menu and it breaks suspend/resume.

However, this change was made well after Flight CD 6, so it's not your problem. Your problem is almost certainly that you added vga=normal to the wrong place in /boot/grub/menu.lst. Please read the comments in that file carefully to find out where to add it in order to have it preserved on upgrade.

Tests with eft rc have shown this bug doesn't appear any more. It seems the bug has been fixed. Therefore, this bug reprot can be closed.
