Bug Description

Using Jaunty, the desktop will randomly become completely unresponsive on my Sony Vaio FW140E (uses an intel gm45 graphics card). There isn't any one activity that seems to set this off, or any amount of time. Once I was browsing the web after about an hour of uptime, and another time I left the computer on overnight and woke up and it was unresponsive.

When this happens, the mouse can move, but no keyboard inputs have any effect and windows don't react to mouse clicks at all. I don't hear any sounds like the fan or hard disk that would indicate that the CPU is maxed out.

I had this same issue with Fedora 10 and Opensuse 11.1 (both of which use the 2.5 version of the intel driver, like Jaunty). In Mandriva 2009 and Ubuntu 8.10 there doesn't seem to be an issue, so it might be an upstream issue with the new driver?

Than you for reporting this bug. Could you also attach
- /var/log/Xorg.0.log
- /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old from the first time you log in after a crash
- /etc/X11/xorg.conf
- the output of `lspci -vvnn`

Also, could you install openssh-server and try to log in from another computer after the crash? You may be able to run `top` and see what is taking up CPU then.

I took a look at top when SSHed into the box, nothing looks out of the ordinary. In fact, it seems that everything is still running normally. AWN is still running, and comes and goes from the top screen, and nothing is taking up a lot of CPU.

Interestingly, however, when I tried to unfreeze the system by restarting X with '/etc/init.d/gdm restart' over SSH, the SSH session froze. Last thing printed to the screen was "* Stopping GNOME Display Manager..."

I cp'd a copy of the Xorg.0.log that was there when it froze to the desktop, so I'll post that after rebooting.

Same problem here using Jaunty Alpha 2 amd64. The affected xserver-xorg-video-intel package is 2.5.1-1ubuntu7.

Same problem on a Dell E6400 with intel 4500HD graphic card using Jaunty.
It might be also a kernel problem because it doesn't show up with 2.6.27-11.

This sort of sounds like another GM45 lockup error that was recently fixed:

Please test with latest updates to Jaunty and see if the bug still exists.

It looks better now. I did not experience any lockups since using xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.6.1-1ubuntu1.
