Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-vesa

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation NV31 [GeForce FX 5600] [10de:0312] (rev a1)

xserver-xorg-video-nv v1:2.0.0-1ubuntu3

Nvidia FX5600, Dell D1226H monitor, Sony XBR800 TV

With Ubuntu 8.10, neither LiveCD or Install work in default mode, due to this bug in the nv driver: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/309702

I can use Safe mode (IE the VESA driver), but the only resolution available is 640x480. I see the Hardware Driver notification, but when I click on it, the window that opens doesn't fit on the screen, so I am unable to see or click on the Activate button.

Kubuntu 8.10 doesn't have this problem. It still only offers 640x480 with the VESA driver, but the Hardware Drivers window is fully visible.

Hi doveman007,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` too.

Also present in 9.04 right after install. This bug is bad since its the first thing people would see after installing ubuntu, and the only good way to get to a supported resolution. A technically skilled user could go fix the X11/xorg.conf, or hunt around using tab+enter like I did, but its very much trial and error and makes a bad impression. It would be nice if the window were designed to work in a 640x480 mode, since its where it would be used the most often. Also guilty is the "update manager" window since that is the first thing to show up after an install, and it is also too large for a 640x480 display.
By the way, great job on 9.04. Very smooth install and my hardware if supported without needing to compile a custom kernel. Thanks Guys.
