try pressing ctrl-alt-f1, logging in and then shutting down with: sudo shutdown -H

that may give you some useful information

I have tried that. but nothing is working. Its is just like the whole computer just freezes. I press the shut down button and expect to see the ubuntu logo with the progress bar showing how long it will take. But ill never get there it just turns black and my screen is turned off. then nothing.

And why does ubuntu have yo do disk checks on every unclean reboot? cant remember windows doing that?

Windows does do that, actually. If it doesn't, it's allowing corruption to build up which will eventually cause the partition to fail.

What's the make and model of your computer? I'm on an HP Pavilion dv9500 and I have similar symptoms, though I don't think the problem is in gnome-utils. Upon shutdown, whether from halt(8) or the User Switcher Applet, the screen goes black. Eventually the system will shut down (I can tell when it kills ALSA, because the mute button on my laptop goes from blue to orange) some of the way, and will stall. If the power cord is plugged in, it will finish shutting down. If not, I have to hold a key down to get it to halt.

Sporadically, the progress screen will appear, and I can see that it hangs on the stage, "Waiting for all remaining processes to terminate".
