Bug Description

Hi.

I'm new to linux (but not computers), and recently installed Mandriva 2009 preview on my XP laptop - no problem, a dual boot was created automatically by Mandriva installation. As i'm still evaluating mandriva, I did not want to remove it (in fact, I'm also not sure how to remove it yet). Yesterday, I got ubuntu 8.10 (from Linux Format), and installed it... everything seemed to go OK, it took some space from a previous ntfs partition (just like mandriva did), and installed itself, and eventually left me on the ubuntu desktop. I rebooted... but was given no ubuntu option to select (just the previous mandriva/xp boot options). Ubuntu did offer to import documents/settings for xp and mandriva (which i did not need), so it knew they were there - so why no boot option? How do I boot into ubuntu?

All the best,
Greg

Moving to ubiquity, since this problem seems to be an installer issue!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test a current, supported, Ubuntu version. If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect 309936, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

I found, after having this problem, when I reinstalled my Ubuntu (9.10) I fixed this issue by clicking on the "Advanced..." button before the "Install" button on the last step. In the Advanced Options pop-up window; be sure the "Install boot loader" box is checked, AND the "Device for boot loader installation:" list box is the name of the hard drive you are installing on (for example "ATA FUJITSU MHA2200C (93.3 GB)"), and not "(hd0)".
Hope this helps
