Bug Description

Binary package hint: virt-manager

Hello,

I'm following the advice I found here [http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/04/14/virtualization-with-virt-manager-and-kvm-in-ubuntu-804/] and here [http://www.greenhughes.com/content/virtualisation-with-kvm-and-virtmanager-kubuntu-804] to set up a virtual Windows XP on my Ubuntu 8.10 system. Everything works fine until I actually begin the installation of the virtual XP.

As my attached screenshot indicates, I am getting a persistent message that "Setup cannot read the CD you inserted." It should be noted that this error occurs as the XP setup is initiated, not after the first XP reboot, which is another bug [https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238692]

The CD Rom device is mounted and spinning...

This is a genuine copy of XP that I used before I converted to Ubuntu.

Alan,

Do you get this error when using this CD attempting to install on a machine directly or just when attempting to install it on a virtual machine? Is this copy of XP one that you purchased in a box or one that came with the computer?

Can you please try making an image of the CD-ROM using the following command:
$ dd if=/dev/cdrom of=~/windowsxp.iso
Then point virt-mnager to the ISO and let me know if you have the same issue.

Hi David,

I'm currently on holiday, so it will still be several days before I can
perform these tests fully. However, I can tell you that I can successfully
install the program to other computers; this only occurs during as an
attempt at virtualization. I have tested this on both my desktop and laptop
computers with the same effect. I did purchase this CD in a box separately;
it did not come with a computer purchase.

I previously made an .iso of the disk and tried an install but the same bug
occurred. However, I did not use the dd command for the .iso--I just used
Brasero. Would that make a difference?

Yours,

Alan

I borrowed a friend's copy of Windows XP (with sp2). After making a copy as directed above, I was able to begin an installation of XP.

The install proceeds until it hits the first reboot of the XP install at which point I am asked to CTRL + ALT + DELETE. However, the install fails at this point as I am unable to perform this action. But I believe that this is an existing but, correct?

It seems like this bug can be squashed.

Yes, it is an existing bug (bug 105195). I'm marking it as such.

Reporting this occur also in Windows 2000 after DX9.0c install.

After six restarts with windowsupdate.microsoft.com, I finally installed DirectX 9.0c, which created this same behavior also appear on Win2000.

What does DX9.0c install as HDD driver, that breaks BIOS to Kernel loading process?
