Bug Description

Binary package hint: pm-utils

Hi,

I'm trying to get suspend to work in my Toshiba Portege M750 running Intrepid Ibex with no success. Suspend seems to work fine but resuming leaves the laptop with a black screen with only the mouse pointer and totally dead (no keyboard or mouse). After a while the fan starts spinning like mad.

If I suspend from a text console everything works fine but then I can't get back into X because the laptop freezes. Killing X before switching solves this problem but, obviously, isn't what I want :-)

I tried the following this tutorial (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend) to see if I could figure out if any module was the culprit but the only line in dmesg that contains 'hash matche' is:

[1.501712] hash matches /build/buildd/linux-2.6.27/drivers/base/power/main.c:390

uname -a
Linux arestivo-laptop 2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 21:57:00 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

pm-utils:
  Installed: 1.1.2.4-1ubuntu8

If there is any other log that can help fixing this problem just ask.

Thanks

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

It seems is a bug related to the X server.
Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below.

you are using vesafb, ie. a fancy console mode. Try without it.

I was using vesafb at the time I created that dmesg but I tried several times with and without vesab with the same results. Do you want me to attach another dmesg after suspend without vesafb?

By the way, I remembered something else that might be important. Suspend worked twice (in about 100 tries) so there might be some random luck involved.

Another thing I just remembered that might also be important. According to this page (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/ToshibaPortegeM700), suspend worked out of the box with a Portege M700 in Hard. My laptop. the Portege M750, is just a revamped version of the M700. So this issue might be related to something that just from 8.04 to 8.10.

I just tried suspend in both the 9.04 alpha 2 live cd and Fedora 10 live cd. In Ubuntu it still doesn't work but it works fine in Fedora.

Why is the status still tagged as incomplete? Do you need any other information?

It seems to be working in 8.10 now. Probably one of the updates corrected something. No idea which one did it.
