text on menus of openoffice writer 2.4 does not show

The text in the menus does not show except for a split second as I wave my mouse over the menu item as the button transitions between hovering and not hovering. No text shows while the mouse hovers or while the mouse is not hovering just during the transition.

What video driver are you using? Is it nvidia by any chance? If so which exact version of the nvidia driver?

This sounds like a problem I have heard of often which is caused by the nvidia driver being buggy.

Good call! It's an nvidia driver no. 96.43.09. Any suggestions? I am
running an MSI video card. I'd have to open up the computer to see what
model it is. This is an old computer that I am trying and so far liking
Linux/Ubuntu on. I think I will be getting a netbook or laptop with
Ubuntu soon.

All I needed to know was the version which is the 96.43.09 bit.

Chris/Mark,

In addition to OpenOffice 2.4, I noticed a number of other packages are also affected. I could re-enable text in OO by clearing options in it's "View" menu (as described elsewhere. OO 3 also had problems like this too.

Disabled the driver and all is well.

I can supply H/W & versions if anyone want's that info.
