Equation preview not working

If enabled display equations in lyx are previewed as they will appear in the final document. Following the upgrade to 1.3.7 from 1.3.6 this has stopped working. The following error occurs if executed from a cli:

unusual contents found: [symbol sigma][char = mathalpha][char 0 mathalpha][char . mathalpha][char 9 mathalpha]
latex failed to compile 0lyxpreview.tex

Other things seem fine

This was not a bug. I had a wierd lyx input file which caused the error. Once the file was repaired previewing works fine

I am having a similar problem under Debian. It says that latex failed to compile 0lyxpreview.tex, however, if I manually run latex 0lyxpreview, it generates a dvi file without giving any errors. Was this what was happening for you?

No for me it was a corrupted lyx file. For errors like this
I would suggest contacting the lyx general mailing list:
