Bug Description
I'm sorry if this is not actually a bug and if it is thank you for taking a look at it... I think I will start from the DD command and see if I can begin from the very beginning.
When I booted from the HArdy Heron Live CD I got the message:
_______
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.
The last error message was:
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.
_______
and I ignored it.
To install Hardy Heron on my 500Mhz Mac Ibook G3 dual usb with a 10 gig HD I had to do:
sudo ss if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bc count=1
from the live CD and then run the intaller otherwise, after installing, I would get a flashing system folder after restart. While the dd comand was working it was interupted after about 3 gigs because I didn't realize that the power cord was not working properly...
On restart from the live CD I did the install and then restarted and it worked!
Except that the screen resolution was stuck on 800x600 when it should be more than that. So I tried editing my xorg.conf file with:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and on restart I couldn't log in because my q key was typing t and my b key was doing enter and there was no key for j so obviously I didn't configure things correctly.
I didn't know how to fix it and after trying to copy and paste an xorg.conf file that someone posted on a forum from their machine into my xorg.conf file and trying to use the backup copy made from the dpkg-reconfirue comand I decided to reinstall hardy heron from the live CD.
The install went fine.
When trying to update packages last night (LATE) there was a problem, something about input output error and I was to tired to write it down exactly. THe computer was doing clink clink clink wait wait wait bonk bink over and over again. I didn't know if it would ever end so I turned the computer off using the power button.
On Restart this morning I opened pacakge manager and got a window saying:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
So I did:
dpkg --configure -a
and I got this:...

I decided to report the problem and when I click to start firefox I get the spinning cursor and then nothing. So I booted from the live CD and here I am doing my first report. I am new to Ubuntu and I am writting you because I don't know what to do next. THank you for helping.
Jonathan
Do you still have this problem with new version of Ubuntu? I did not have this problem with my ppc under karmic. (excellent detail, by the way.)
