Bug Description

Ubuntu 8.10 32-bit + 9.04 alpha 4 32 bit.
Logitech UltraX Media Desktop mouse partially working. Scrolling works ok, tilting wheel is not working and tilting wheel is not producing events in xev.

some more information concerning my bug:
1) If you turn off PC, then turn on and boot in ubuntu - tilt wheel is not working and not producing XEV events.
2) then if you unplug receiver from USB port and plug it back while ubuntu running - tilt will wheel work, it will produce XEV events and everything is ok.
3) if you reboot - tilt wheel will not work again.
That's very strange, probably something wrong in USB initialization code at boot time. Coz everything is fine when you replug usb in running ubuntu.

Hello!

I've found bug #219925, which seems to be related with your report. Could you please tell me if it is the same issue? Thank you!

Hello!
To me my bug is a little different from mentioned above. That problem was mouse tilt wheel is not working properly, while mine bug is that tilt function of wheel is not detected.
Also I have some more information concerning my bug:
1) If you turn off PC, then turn on and boot in ubuntu - tilt wheel is not producing XEV events.
2) then if you unplug receiver from USB port and plug it back - tilt will wheel work, it will produce XEV events and everything is ok.
3) if you reboot - tilt wheel will not work again.

Is it some kind of joke?
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingRemovableDevices
1) it requires to unplug device - in this case my keyboard and mouse.
2) it requires to issue command in terminal without keyboard, how do I supposed to do that?

JugglerLKR, I apologize for my fault!

I made 2 mistakes:
1) The best package for your report is not linux, but xserver-xorg-input-mouse.
2) The correct link for requested information is here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingMouseDetection

I can confirm that my previous message was not a joke. Please be patient, I'm not so experienced at triaging bug reports!

Best Regards.

now about mouse buttons as reported by xev | grep -i button:
mouse has 9 buttons:
1 - LMB
2 - MMB (scroll whell click)
3 - RMB
4 - wheel up
5 - wheel down
8 - 1st thumb button (backward in windows)
9 - 2nd thumb button (forward in windows)

as I mentioned earlier - event for 6 and 7 ARE NOT PRODUCED - 6 should be tilt wheel left and 7 should be tilt right.

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

I think I'm experiencing the same problem. With a Logitech G5 USB mouse, xev reports events for only some of the buttons. (I'm thinking this would explain why I am unable to map the other buttons using the usual approaches.) I'm using Jaunty 32 bit.

I can confirm this bug in jaunty 32 bit release, same experience as it was in alpha.

I tried Karmic Alpha 6 today, and found that xev reported events for all my mouse buttons. This is a good sign for that future release, but the problem remains in Jaunty.

Still here on 10.10. I have Logitech RX 650 with tilt wheel. Unplugging the receiver doesn't help.

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.

Ubuntu Natty Desktop 32bit 11.04 - bug still exists and reproducable the same way.
The problem is in Logitech USB wireless reciever initialization code as far as I can understand now.

JugglerLKR, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Hardy desktop reached EOL on May 12, 2011.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue on a supported release? If so, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in a supported release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
