dvd playback error

Bug Description

I've been chasing my tail on this and nothing seems to help. I've reinstalled version 8.10 6 times now thinking that maybe I screwed something up with trying everything everyone has told me to do.
I got a clean video (though I have zero control while playing) by using this command, export DVDCSS_METHOD=title && mplayer dvd://

I have no clue as to why, no one seems to be able to tell me either. All I keep getting is EVERYONE telling me it's a codec issue. It can't be if i can get it to play via that code. it has to be a bug somewhere, a program not using the codec right or something.

Here is my other thread on the subject, swept under the rug I guess, --> http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1009052

I have literally tried everything that I have found related to CSS, DVD playback and read over 500 different posts. Nothing has changed.

All players work via the command line, "player name dvd ://" (e.g. vlc dvd://) but not from anything GUI.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Please attach the output of
   apt-cache policy libdvdcss2 mplayer
so we can see which version of libdvdcss and mplayer you are using.

I'm quite happy with

libdvdcss2:
  Installed: 1.2.10-0.2medibuntu1
  Candidate: 1.2.10-0.2medibuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1.2.10-0.2medibuntu1 0
        500 file: intrepid/free Packages
        500 http://packages.medibuntu.org intrepid/free Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
mplayer:
  Installed: 2:1.0~rc2-0ubuntu17+medibuntu1
  Candidate: 2:1.0~rc2-0ubuntu17+medibuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2:1.0~rc2-0ubuntu17+medibuntu1 0
        500 http://packages.medibuntu.org intrepid/non-free Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     2:1.0~rc2-0ubuntu17 0
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/multiverse Packages

Note that the both packages aren't provided by Ubuntu but by Medibuntu and therefor bug reports about this packages should go to Medibuntu, see https://launchpad.net/medibuntu/

I'm going to marks this bug report as 'incomplete' as it requires more informations from you. Please mark it as 'invalid' if it is about packages from Medibuntu. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status for more about bug statuses.

Which bashrc file should it be added to?
I copy/pasted into the terminal, nothing happened, least that I could
tell. So I searched for any file named ."bashrc" and got 4 results, all
text files. I opened and looked at each. None of them contained any text
relating to libdvdcss2 or any variant.

Here are the pastes of the 4 files, file name and location are line 1
which I added:

http://paste.ubuntu.com/85144/
http://paste.ubuntu.com/85145/
http://paste.ubuntu.com/85148/
http://paste.ubuntu.com/85152/

Those are after adding the text in the terminal and restarting the
computer. I had tried the same command prior (adding to the bashrc) and
it didn't take that time either. That was the 4 page link on
ubuntuforums that I linked in my post there, same place I found the
terminal command that got the dvd to play properly.

Something must be named just a bit wrong or I'm doing something wrong.
Far as everyone says things should be working. Got me.

The quote seems to be a bit misleading. You need to ad the line
  export DVDCSS_METHOD=title
to the file .bashrc (note the dot!) in your home directory. You can do this either by opening that file in an editor and appending the line at the end of the file or by running
  echo "export DVDCSS_METHOD=title" >> ~/.bashrc
from the command line.

Hi! You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you still reproduce this issue in this or a newer release? Thanks in advance.
