Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The Power Manager Brightness Applet (2.24.0) reports the incorrect brightness level on a Lenovo W500 laptop. I am using Ubuntu 8.10.

Adjusting the panel brightness with the slider on the applet results in correct adjustment, but subsequently the applet icon displays a red slashed circle error symbol in the middle of it. Hovering the mouse over this shows the error message 'Cannot get laptop panel brightness'.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 9.04? Thanks in advance.

Under 9.04 it looked initially as though the Brightness Applet was working; using the keyboard to adjust the display brightness popped up a nice display of the brightness. However the icon in the bar at the top of the screen didn't seem to indicate anything, and when you clicked on that and changed the brightness using the slider that appears, the associated icon displays a 'Stop' symbol in it (a circle with a slash through it).

I don't know whether these two ways of changing the brightness (keyboard vs slider) are the same program or not. Anyway there seems to be some conflict.
