auto eth0 messed up when edited

Bug Description
What I did: On the almost freshly installed Ubuntu I opened the "(System > Preferences > ) Network Configuration" and the "Network Connections" window opened up. In the "Wired" section I selected "auto eth0" an clicked "Edit". I changed the "Connection name" and the IPv4 settings to "Manual" and entered my IP information (192.168.0,51, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.0.1) and the DNS Servers (same as Gateway).
What the system did: At first everything works. But as soon as the system reboots a new "Wired Connection" (again "auto eth0") is displayed in the list, and is selected as default connection. All further attempts to set _my_ connection as default work only for the current session, but after rebooting the "auto eth0" connection is always default.
What I expected: I expected the system to either automatically select my settings of allow me to specify a default which is actually accepted (the "System Setting" box was always reset after clicking on Edit).
Solution: After deleting my setting and creating a new ("Add") the system accepts my connection as default.
Assumption: Apparently the package do not like editing the "auto eth0" setting.
Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 8.10 - the Intrepid Ibex - released in October 2008.
Further information: There is a DHCP server in the network, so the "auto" config worked for the system because it got its connection.
