Bug Description

Running Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit on an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.

I cannot log in to AIM or Yahoo! messanger using Pidgin if gui-ufw isn't open.

Please note, I have no rules set in my firewall for any of these. Gui-ufw is simply an interface and opening it should not effect the operation of the firewall.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install Pidgin
2. Install GUFW
3. Use Pidgin to log into AIM or Yahoo! messanger (connection will not be made)
4. Open GUFW
5. Use Pidgin to log into AIM or Yahoo! messanger (connection will be made)

That's an odd one. I never had this issue myself.

Gufw is a GUI for ufw, ufw is a frontend for iptables. Then if you has closed Gufw, the iptables is configured in other case.
It isn't necesary open Gufw for has deny/allow the firewall.
I recomend you that uninstall iptables, ufw and gufw, and reinstall again.
Best regards.

It appears that this only happens when I reboot my machine. It is still an issue.

Don't worry Thelasko :)
I think you have a little issue with iptables, and you have block the output traffic.
Maybe you must refresh your iptables ;)
iptables -F
iptables -X

or reinstall iptables/ufw/gufw ?

Cheers.

I tried reinstalling, but that didn't fix the problem. I have yet to try iptabes -F and ipdables -X. Since I don't restart pidgin very often, this is only a minor inconvenience.

It is strange that nobody have this bug.
In any case in the future, we will reopen the bug.
Gufw does not close or open the ports when is open, is a permanent configuration of iptables.
With the current data can not fix it.
Cheers!

I've also been experiencing the same behaviour for some time now, exactly as Thelasko laid out in the description. I, too, realize gufw is just a gui & whether it's running or not shouldn't have an affect on anything once ufw is enabled, but this is what appears to be happening. On a fresh install of Xubuntu 8.10:

Installed pidgin, installed gufw
Ran gufw, checked 'Firewall enabled' box, closed gufw
Reboot system, connect to internet
"$ status ufw" reports 'Status: loaded'
Run pidgin -> accounts cannot connect (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Jabber)
Run gufw -> now pidgin's accounts suddenly *can* connect..

Upon reboot, pidgin cannot connect again until I run gufw. I have however noticed that for whatever reason, if I don't run gufw, but wait a while, pidgin will find itself able to connect after several minutes (~15?).

Maybe this is just something silly & simple we're just overlooking? It's frustrating, nonetheless. >_<

What's the Gufw & ufw version?
for Gufw -> About window.
for ufw in terminal -> sudo ufw version
Thanks

ufw 0.23.3
Gufw 0.20.6
I did try two different versions of Gufw prior, (0.20.7-0ubuntu2 [universe] & 0.20.7 [tuxfamily]), but no noticeable changes related to the issue above. If there are any other specs, logs or other info you'd like to know, don't hesitate to ask.

I must say, I've never waited 15 minutes to see if it loads by itself.
