Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

System Info:
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10
xserver-xorg-video-intel:
  Installiert: 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10
  Kandidat: 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10

I used the alternate installation CD, because the desktop CD did not work (neither normal nor safe graphics mode) perhaps for the same reason as the the installed system does not work.

Hardware Info:
Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook S6010
00:02.0 (8086:3577) VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82830 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 04)

I am currently unable to get a working xorg-server for the mentioned hardware configuration. I've tried the following configurations:

1. With an empty xorg.conf (using the intel driver) as supplied by default
At first I get a distorted picture, but after a few seconds I'm thrown back to the console.
see Xorg.0.log.empty
2. Using an old working

2. using an old working configuration from dapper (the most recent version of ubuntu that's known to work on this machine) which uses i810.
same result as with the empty configuration
(see Xorg.0.log.dapper for a log of the working configuration in ubuntu 6.06)
3. using the old configuration but with "vesa" instead of "i810"
I get the same distorted image but now it stays and additionally the whole screen is continously filled with an ever growing blur.
(see Xorg.0.log.vesa)

Sorry for the long delay. I have had no access to the affected laptop for some time.

Here is the requested output of lspci -vvnn.

I will look into installing the current development version as soon as I have access to a sufficiently fast internet connection.

Please reopen the bug.

I still don't get a usable X display with karmic koala - it works with the old xorg-xserver-intel-i810 driver.
