Bug Description
Binary package hint: vlc
I'm running 8.10 and with an ATI RV515 [Radeon X1300] video card. When all desktop effects are turned off video plays fine but when it's on I see alot of video flickering. It may have to do with the driver since with other drivers everything works ok.
Quick fix:
You need to change your video player to output via X11.
Settings>
Select "Output modules" and change to "X11 video output".
I assume this would work for any video player that allows you to change its output.

This is a limitation of the Mesa DRI stack's XAA acceleration method which the proprietary fglrx driver uses. ATI needs to update their driver to use the EXA acceleration method otherwise hardware- accelerated xv and desktop effects may not be used together without this flickering.
We are not going to default to x11 software rendering output as the CPU usage is horrendous with fullscreen video. There's no reason to punish those not using desktop effects or have modern accelerated desktop support in their video drivers.
