Is the package installed successfully now? If not, does removing the package, deleting the download folder (in Synapic preferences) and reinstalling the package help?

Installation requiered a complete uninstall using the synaptic package manager. I suspect the installation of the nvidia-glx driver had something to do with the problem; I did not reboot after installing that one before I began updating the system.
But all is good now.
