Bug Description

Binary package hint: tracker

In Tracker 0.6.6 (0.6.6-1ubuntu5.1) I have set to index my Evolution emails, but there is no emails indexed ever.
Evolution version is 2.24.2, Ubuntu version is 8.10 Intrepid Ibex.

I have installed Beagle (0.3.8-1ubuntu2), just to see if it can index my Evolution emails, but there was the same problem.

"mail-notification" (5.4.dfsg.1-1build1) can't handle Evolution mail account too.
(Could be another bug, but I guess there is actual problem with Evolution 2.24.2, or maybe Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit.)

There is actually no reported error, no crashes, no other visible bugs, except none of these programs: Tracker, Beagle, Mail Notification can't access Evolution emails. In Evolution I have 8 pop email accounts and Evolution by itself works as expected, except viewing picture attachments crashes:

maks@maks-desktop:~$ evolution
evolution-shell-Message: Killing old version of evolution-data-server...
** (evolution:9025): DEBUG: mailto URL command: evolution %s
** (evolution:9025): DEBUG: mailto URL program: evolution
**
Gtk:ERROR:/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.14.4/gtk/gtklayout.c:394:gtk_layout_move_internal: assertion failed: (child)
Aborted
maks@maks-desktop:~$

I would be glad to provide more info, I just want you to know I am new to linux, so please point me how to do it.
Thanks.

I do not believe this should be assigned to tracker, this bug is in evolution. I've just experienced the exact same error opening attachments in a mail sent to me:

Gtk:ERROR:/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.14.4/gtk/gtklayout.c:394:gtk_layout_move_internal: assertion failed: (child)

This is with GNOME evolution 2.24.3, and Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid.

It crashed when trying to view an attachment below the message by clicking the generated thumbnail with the dropdown next to it.

The crash only seem to happen when I open a specific image, which I'll attach now. It's probably something to do with an internal data structure - perhaps it has extra info in it that Photoshop has added?

looks like a gtkhtml crash, could you install the libglib, libgtk, evolution and libgtkhtml dbgsym packages and get a new trace? thanks in advance.

On Ubuntu 8.10 i386, my Evolution isn't crashing at all, but tracker also isn't indexing my email messages.

I have two imap accounts configured in Evolution. Tracker has finished indexing, and although it picks up various other kinds of object, it reports 0 emails indexed.

So I think the crash and the 64bit-ness are red herrings as far as the title of the bug is concerned.

tracker 0.6.6-1ubuntu5.1
evolution 2.24.3-0ubuntu1

Here's a "me too" comment, i.e. tracker is not indexing my evolution's email messages on my laptop, using Intrepid.

Please describe the problem:
In Evolution, you can set whether or not mail should be indexed on a per-folder
basis (by right clicking the folder, and then clicking properties). If mail is
set to be not indexed in Evolution, tracker should not index the mail either.

Can you please confirm the settings in evolution as mentioned above.

I have just checked my install, and I have never changed any of the indexing setting (didn't even know they existed!), and the indexing is turned on, so I assume this is the default behaviour?

If not is it possible that tracker is turning of the indexing in evolution - on the basis of "why do it twice", if this is the case then surely this should be highlighted upstream to the bug in the link above.

David.

not really an evolution issue and could be fixed in jaunty using the new tracker and evolution versions

Could you confirm that you're saying backports of evolution and tracker
would resolve the issue on Intrepid?

Ciao,
Sheldon.

Sorry mr. Sebastien Bacher,

About Fix Released...
I receive updates every day for my Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10. 64 bit.
Would I receive this fix automatically or do I have to remove Tracker and manually install it from tracker website?
My current version is still 0.6.6, but on tracker website I can see 0.6.91.

I don't know if I can ask questions like that here, but forgive me please as I really need tracker functionality in my Ubuntu, because it is my main computer.

Thank you.

the new version and the fix are in jaunty only, tracker has been mostly rewritten in jaunty and the change would not easily apply to intrepid and since it's not a lts and tracker is not used by default it will probably not be backported there

Hi all:

I just installed jaunty Desktop edition, 64 bits, and I'm getting the same problem as with intrepid. No evolution email gets indexed and I don't see any option in evolution to activate or deactivate indexing on folders, and there are no error messages at all.

All my email accounts are IMAP.

Thank you guys.

It's not a Tracker only problem. I have tried Beagle and Tracker on an old Evolution account with local fetchmail/postfix retrieval. There are no errors in the mails, ev-summery and *cmeta*, as I have resolved all existing errors. I have tried a new created Evolution account too, but still no indexing.

I'm have tested all with Jaunty only. This bugs exists in Fedora 10 too.

Now I have upgraded to Jaunty too.

- Tracker 0.6.93
- Evolution 2.26.1
- Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 - 64bit
- Google Desktop v1.2.0.0088

Google Desktop index every possible info on my hdd, Tracker don't index any of my Evolution emails. I just want to know if there is anyone who use Tracker on Jaunty 64bit and has successfully indexed Evolution email?
If so, please let me know. This Tracker / Evolution issue is driving me so mad I am ready to clean install everything from zero. I don't want to use Google Desktop if there is Ubuntu original tool Tracker.

Chris Coulson (chrisccoulson) wrote :

E-mail indexing doesn't work in Intrepid because the old indexer module doesn't work with the version of Evolution in Intrepid. There is a new push-module to replace the old indexer module which should work with the newer versions of Evolution, however, that is not working properly yet and has been disabled too. There is already a bug report tracking that, so I'm marking this a duplicate of that one.
