blender will not start

both the official version from the blender web and the package downloaded from apt-get refuse to start on jaunty (as of dec 4th 2:02), Intel Core Duo processor, Gnome environment, 3 gigs ram, ATI gfx card.

Package updates between when I reported this bug and now have fixed the problem
