Inconsistent font rendering between apps

Bug Description

With default system font settings i.e. full hinting and sub-pixel highlighting, using QT4 apps like Opera, by default, there a large inconsitancies between the font rendering. Largley, they are rendered without hinting and look plain ugly.

"Hinting/antialiasing settings set in user preferences are ignored and are set based upon symlinks located at /etc/fonts/conf.d (i.e. defaulted at medium font hinting, no subpixel hinting)."

I've noticed this since Gutsy and is still in effect in Intrepid. Thankfully, the following post describes how to fix it -- by changing some symlinks:

But this is a bug that should be fixed in future releases.

I have this problem in QT apps like skype.

Also Firefox 3.5 in Karmic ignore that i have selected full hinting under Appearance->Fonts (Why isnt this the default btw???)

This page describes the problem well and is the workaround Im using now:

Works both for Skype and Firefox 3.5
