after automatic update, /usr/lib is not in library path

Bug Description
Not sure about the cause, but this morning (but I maybe did not reboot for a long time) the synaptic and eclipse (and possibly many more progs) stopped working with the message :
$ synaptic
synaptic: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/
The workaround is adding line :
/usr/lib
to the file (for example) "/etc/ld.
And then running "ldconfig" as root.
I am not sure what the root cause is ... only I know that the "libc6 2.8~20080505-
