Bug Description

Transmission 1.51 has a large number of new features, usability improvements and bug fixes. It would be nice to provide this for Intrepid and Hardy users, who now have relatively old versions.

Transmission 1.41 is coming soon, and I will get that in to Jaunty when it is released. There are some high-priority bugs milestoned upstream for 1.41, so I think we should wait for 1.41 before considering a backport to Intrepid.

Builds, install, runs well without source change, using Prevu under
Intrepid.

Hi Jean Levasseur,
Had come to know other day that transmission 1.40 has few bugs
and some critical ones (major regressions) at that. Its 1.42 which is
supposed to be good one.

I would refer you to this thread
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=994532 where we are
discussing transmission

FWIW, I prepared Transmission 1.42 for Jaunty. I'm just awaiting somebody to sponsor it, but it seems a lot of people are probably still on vacation.

Thanks for the info, I haven't used much Transmission since the upgrade,
so I didn't notice anything. I'll downgrade to 1.38 and wait for 1.42
to come out!

1.42-0ubuntu1 is in the archive now, and this backports with no source changes.

The packaging has changed for Jaunty though - transmission-cli has been split in to transmission-daemon and transmission-cli. Would it be best to revert this change for the backport, and keep the Intrepid packaging? (it's quite trivial to do)

it _might_ be makes sense to keep increasing version for Jaunty up to 1.5x

but I'd really want to see rather 1.42 (yes, particular version 1.42, not 1.40) on Hardy -- Hardy has enough stability on overall system level, and 1.42 seem to be good *milestone-alike* stable (no painful bugs, you can have uptime weeks, if not months) for Transmission.

It does make sense to have the latest version as the backport. I'm not sure why you would prefer 1.42 over 1.51. The latest version includes a large number of bugfixes.

1.42 is no longer in the Ubuntu archive as it has been replaced by 1.51 in Jaunty.

I don't _push_ for my opinion, I try to bring rationale.

Rationale is to keep something currently-most-stable with LTS (definition https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LTS ) while stuff current unstable/testing with fresh, sometimes bleeding-edge, SW. This way you provide those who seek stability with more stable things, and those who look for advanced/feature-rich at expense of quality (you know, you can't name semi-/immature software as reliable and robust, it just don't hold argument of stability by definition).

Now, coming back to Transmission, 1.42 looks as stable enough, i.e. good pair for LTS. While 1.5x looks nice together with fresh & shiny Jaunty ;)

Andriy, 1.51 is the latest stable upstream release, and therefore a perfect candidate for backporting. It makes no sense to backport an old version over the latest where no regressions have been identified. LTS users that demand high stability should not be using backports anyway.

Again, 1.42 has already been removed from the Ubuntu repositories. Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports where rule #1 states "Only packages currently in Ubuntu's repositories are eligible for backporting".
