Bug Description

I don't have any sound since upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10. I've upgraded kernel to 2.6.27-9-generic, without results. I can't play any kind of sound, no matter the file type. Everything was fine before, in Ubuntu 8.04.
My sound card is detected correctly. Nothing in /var/log/messages. Volume control activated (nothing is muted). I've tried to stop pulseaudio server (i think it was not in 8.04), but doesn't either.
I post some logs, but they all look fine.

Have you tried killing pulseaudio, and seeing whether sound works from any application?

There were a few bugs the past days about missing sound. Just by chance:
Can you enable sound again by setting PCM in "alsamixer -Dhw" to 100 or so?

I have just tried to, without results. I set all the "lines" to 100.
Any more ideas? Any more logs I should investigate?
Thanks, bugmenot.

I (I am no expert) think that PCM is is muted in the screenshot you uploaded. I think the |MM| under PCM means it is muted. Select PCM and press M to unmute (maybe there must be no sound applications running in order to do that). Maybe it helps.
You could also try a "alsactl restore".

That corrected my problem! As you say, PCM was muted!
Thanks a lot, goto. Anyway, I don't know whether close this bug, since I did not ever muted PCM; updating to 8.10 did that for me. Maybe the bug as a "bug" itself should be marked as "fixed" whenever that issue doesn't occurr. But maybe that won't ever happen. What do you think about this?

Note: I am going to change the title of the bug, because that way this bug report will become more useful to people with the same problem.

No problem, Álvaro del Olmo Alonso. :) Glad to hear it's working for you now.
There are already a few bug reports, so I'll mark this as a duplicate of bug 288039. I only wanted to know if you could fix this bug by unmute PCM, because there are a few different reports with similar symptoms but they could not all be fixed in that way.
Thanks for helping to make Ubuntu better :)
