Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This assumes that there's already a location added in the clock applet.

Click on the date/time applet. Expand the 'Location' section. Click 'Edit'. Select the location. Click 'Edit'. The 'Location Name' field will be empty; if you click 'OK', the name will be blanked.

The 'Location Name' field should be filled in by default; clicking 'Edit', then 'OK' on an item should not change that item.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10

 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
SourcePackage: gnome-panel
Uname: Linux 2.6.27-7-generic i686

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems. http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
a. Make sure there's a location added in the clock applet. To do so, click on the date on the panel, and expand the 'Locations' spinner. There should be a location available there.
b. Click the 'Edit' button to the right of the 'Locations' spinner. This will pop up a 'Clock Preferences' dialog box, with the 'Locations' tab open. A list of locations will be there, along with three buttons to the right of it: 'Add', 'Edit' and 'Remove'; all but the first will be grayed out.
c. Select a location by single-clicking it in the list. The 'Edit' button at the right side of the dialog box will no longer be grayed out.
d. Click the 'Edit' button.
e. Observe the 'Location Name' field.

2. the behavior you expected, and
I expected the location name described in step (b) to be displayed in the 'Location Name' field.

3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
The location name described in step (b) is not displayed in the 'Location Name' field; in fact, the 'Location Name' field is blank.

If you need more detail, please let me know and I can expand any of that further.

Thank you Adam for your detailed explanation. Unfortunately I can not confirm the bug. If I click "edit" the "Location name" field contains the location name it should instead of beeing blank (I added a screencapture)

Martin, I can confirm that if I do what you did, I can't reproduce the bug. However, if I type in a location name--for instance, "My House"--then that name won't be preserved when I go back to the edit dialog. If the name was auto-filled, then it will be.

Can you reproduce the problem with a manually filled-in name, rather than an auto-completed one?

And thank you for the attached video; I would never have figured out what we were doing differently without it.

You are right Adam. Filling the "location name" field manually with a name (instaed of using auto-completion) triggers the bug. Thus I set this to condfirmed. Nice work.

Btw.: I did the screencapture with "gtk-recordmydesktop" (just in case there are more bugs with unclear steps to reproduce the bug).
