Thanks for the report.

Has this always been an issue, or has it only started happening after your last update or so? How does the x server crash, does it just dump you onto a login prompt, freeze the computer etc?

Thanks again

This issue started since I updated after a fresh install. No additional driver is installed. After Crashing X-Server goes back to login Prompt. Even dropping bit depth to 16 doesn't help

I also have experienced this issue. It is exactly as ritvik describes: hit CTRL+ALT+F7 to go back to GNOME, the screen flashes, and the GNOME login screen appears. I am using the same chipset ("Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Device") and the same driver (i810). Additionally, when I installed Ubuntu on my co-worker's computer (identical to mine), it experienced the same problem. This is on a fresh install of Breezy (co-worker) and a dist-upgrade from Hoary (mine).

Apparently, this is caused by the BIOS thinking you have 1MB of Video RAM. I have this particular chip on a Dell Dimension 4600, and just setting the value in the BIOS to 8 MB fixes this. I read on the forums that editing the "Device" section of your xorg.conf file and adding: Option "VideoRam" "8192k" (some people also seemed to have luck with adding the VertRefresh and HorizSync parameters to the "Monitor" section, though it seems that the VideoRam part is the most important). I haven't confirmed this last, but the BIOS change does work (if the xorg.conf fix works, the way to easily fix this would be to add that option whenever the i810 driver is used).

I experienced this issue as well, but only if I switch to a text console while Gnome is starting. Once it is up and running, I can switch freely.
My hardware is a Toshiba Satellite M70 with an Intel i915gm graphics controller.

I experience the same kind of problem with a via video card, so it might be a general xorg issue, not especially i810...

It happens to me in a clean installation of Gutsy Beta
I experience the same problem any time I do what the bug description says. I have an nvidia Geforce 6600 AGP with 128MB and the repository drivers, so it isn't i810 only

Could you please recheck it with Gutsy Final Live CD? In Gutsy i810 driver is deprecated and intel driver is used instead.

@sancheztavo
I guess your issue is a different bug report since it does work on many cards so it isn't a general xorg problem. I would file another bug report for your issue against nvidia-glx or which driver you use.

I am closing this bug report since this issue should be fixed in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 and there is no response for more than two months.

Same problem here (please reopen?)
I change to another VT and then back to tty7 and then xserver crashes and I relogin.
I suspected this beeing a misconfiguration of my system but now also my girlfriend observed the same problem.
the difference to the original bug: it only occurs /sometimes/ - very seldom but it happens and it is still annoying to loose a whole desktop session.

we both use ubuntu gutsy, one laptop has a X3100 with intel driver the other one is a gma945 also with intel driver.

Hardy Heron Alpha5 was recently released. It contains an updated version of the Intel driver. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha5 Live CD from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-5/ . If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha5 .

If it still crashes please attach the following files and outputs:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
~/.xsession-errors
output of lspci -vvnn
output of cat /proc/acpi/video/*/DOS
output of sudo cat /proc/acpi/dsdt

Thanks; closing. If anyone is still experiencing it in Hardy beta or newer, please feel free to reopen, but make sure to attach a backtrace with debug packages of xserver and xserver-xorg-video-intel. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingXorg for directions.

I am still experiencing this as well. I have tried running

startx -- :1

In the first tty ( ctrl+alt+f1 ) as well as running it from a gnome-terminal and seeing what happens. Both have the same output:

When I ran it from a gnome terminal (startx -- :1) I had to run sudo for it to run. Either way, the output is the same. That output is from the terminal and nothing is written to .xsession-errors. I have also attached the XOrg log file.
