Not sure of technical information, but crash report generated following automatic upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 on an eeepc. Hopefully the crash reporter will attach the necessary information for the developers

There have been a large number of bugfixes with the latest VLC release, 1.0.0~rc2-1ubuntu1. Can you reproduce your issue with this latest version? You can test this in Ubuntu Karmic, or Ubuntu Jaunty with the MOTU Media PPA at https://launchpad.net/~motumedia/+archive/ppa . Thanks in advance.

This bug was found during an upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10, so probably doesn't apply to 9.04. At the time I was reporting so it could be fixed for others doing this same upgrade. I have since upgraded to 9.04 without VLC problems, so assume this has been fixed in later releases.
