Bug Description

Ubuntu is the first distribution to provide support for Kurdish. But yet there ist no keyboard configuration present that covers all the letters in the Kurdish alphabet. I can provide the necessary data. I am just not sure if this is the right place for that.

If it's ok I will provide a configuration based on the Turkish Alt-Q configuration.

It will be a file called "ku" (Kurdish) which will be placed in /etc/X11/xkb/symbols. If anything else is necessary, we will look for that, too.

This seems to be fixed upstream meanwhile, is there a chance that a Kurdish keyboard will make it into Dapper?

BTW, we used three variants there and only the diffs, so the file is actually much smaller than the example posted here.

Yes, I was planning on looking at what new layouts upstream has added
and pull those in.

Thanks for looking into it. We have an issue with the listing of the language, as you may have seen in the upstream bug.

It would be very strange to have a Kurdish keyboard listed under "Turkey" and with the indicator "Tur", because the same keyboard it is used also in Syria, Iran and Iraq. Keyboards should not be country-specific, but language-specific.

The best think would be to have it listed under "Kurdish" or "Kurdistan".

It seems to be added under Turkey upstream. To avoid migration problems later, I prefer to go with what upstream uses, so please convince xkeyboard-config upstream to put it under Kurdistan and I'll be happy to do the same in dapper.

We didn't convince them, because they see the problem. To us, it's more important THAT the Kurdish keyboard layots appears in dapper than WHERE they appear.

Since this seems to be fixed upstream, will it be included before the release?

xkeyboard-config (0.8-7) dapper; urgency=low

  * Grab Kurdish keymaps from upstream. Malone: #30361
  * Nuke /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc if it's a directory. This is
    kinda-wrong, but leaving it around is worse. Malone #23083.
  * Add Spanish translation from upstream CVS. Malone #22424
  * Add LSGT to keycodes/evdev. Malone: #42846
  * Remove Daniel from maintainer field in control file.
