Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

First, it's not a crash by Flash. I use Flash 10 successfully on various websites without any crash. Only on some individual websites Firefox crashes reproduceable while calling the URL. Those websitesare most without any plugin. Only HTML and CSS. One of those websites is the today Friday, 28. Nov. 2008 website of the Apple Store at http://store.apple.com/us or http://store.apple.com/de

Calling Firefox from command line I get the following output after firefox's crash:

desktop:~$ firefox
ICEDTEAPLUGIN_DEBUG = (null)
QPixmap: Invalid pixmap parameters
The program 'firefox' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 11225 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
Locking assertion failure. Backtrace:

 Firefox 3 is the next major release of the standalone Mozilla browser; it is
 written in the XUL language and designed to be lightweight and cross-platform.

 This is a meta package that will point to the latest firefox package in

I got plenty of crashes with the same console output reported by Yabba (even in the middle of filing this bug!!!) and these are my observations:

- It's not related to Flash. Happens while editing Wikis, filing bugs through another Bugzilla interface and browsing plain HTML websites.

- Seems related to draw operations on scrollbars (or related elements)

- So far it has been reported only on 64-bit kernels
  Mine is:
  Linux Core2Duo 2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 22:15:32 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I've attached the console output at the time of failure, and a backtrace taken with gdb. Hope it's helpful, because this issue is driving me crazy. :-)

We'd like to figure out what's causing this bug for you, but we haven't heard back from you in a while. Could you please let us know if the upgrade resolved your issue? Thanks!

Well, Kubuntu 8.10 was so buggy that I made the move to 9.04 - it couldn't be worst - and I am happier. I recommend everyone with Kubuntu 8.10 and the use of KDE4 to upgrade. 9.04 was much more stable. Kubuntu 8.10 is the worst release of Kubuntu they ever made! :/
The cause of this error was in the incompatibility of Gnome and KDE libraries which are used in a kind of mix for Firefox.

Changed in firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → Invalid
