Switching to fullscreen crashes VLC

Switching to fullscreen, flashes screen and does not recover, the sound still plays but nothing else responds, has to force shut down.

**note**
It's only happened when playing avi files, I'm not sure if thats a coincidence.

VLC crashes no matter what format I play or with what video output.

I'm using Kubuntu 9.04, with nvidia 6600GT or 7600GT and comercial drivers.

It looks like every player is crashing or stopes playing video while resizing the movie to nearly 200% of it's size.
So the problem should be somewhere else!
