Bug Description

Binary package hint: gimp

In the 'Add Layer Mask' dialog box, the drop-down box for selecting which channel to use is grayed out. If I choose the 'Channel' option and click the 'Add' button anyway, I get the message "Please select a channel first."

GIMP 2.6.1, Ubuntu 8.10

Works correctly for me. If your image does have any channels the size of your layer, then the combo-box lists them and it is not grayed-out. Does your image have any channels (saved selections) at all?

Four channels are listed in the Channels dialog: Red, Green, Blue, and Alpha. I would like to initialize a layer mask to the Red channel. Even when layer is the same size as the entire image, no channels are listed in the drop-down box.

If I make a saved selection, it is listed in the drop-down box, but the other four channels still are not.

It looks like this is the intended, though unintuitive behavior. If I right-click on the 'Red' channel and choose 'Duplicate Channel', it creates a fifth channel named 'Red Channel Copy' which does get listed in the 'Add Layer Mask' window.

My understanding now is that the 'Red' channel is not actually a channel, despite being called one.
