I have the same problem... The license approval request locked up my terminal and I finally had to close the terminal and kill the process from another terminal. Now dpkg is in a precarious state such that it will neither install nor remove the sun-java5-jre package. I have re-started several times and tried every reasonable aptitude command. Can someone at least tell me how to re-stabilize my ubuntu installation?

We can recover control of everything and install the sun-java5-jre package by using the graphical package manager: System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager. Un-mark the sun-java5-jre package and apply changes. Check the box at the bottom of the license agreement and install the package.
