Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After using the Ubuntu 8.10 Live CD on my day-old Satellite Pro S200 the video card (or LCD monitor) has broken permanently.

Now only the top half of the screen displays correctly, and the bottom half is just random lines.

I have attached a lspci -vnn I managed to get using the console TTYs on the live CD.

Everything was working properly until the video mode was changed during booting of the Live CD, and now the video card appears to be permanent broken (i.e. it doesn't work in bios, boot-up, windows or the live cd. I don't have a monitor to check whether it would work with one unfortunately.

I'm planning on returning this computer to the store tomorrow as it may just be a one-off hardware issue, but I am reporting it here in case it isn't a one-off issue.

I've just taken the computer back and gotten a new one, but I'm a little reluctant to install Ubuntu on it at the moment. However, I did discover when the tech was checking it that the video card did work fine with a monitor output, so it may be the LCD panel which is at fault. Is it possible that it was sending invalid modelines and Ubuntu could have broken it by putting it in an invalid mode?

Sorry to hear about your video problems. I don't think you will find anyone here who would be willing to guarantee that it is not Ubuntu that broke your system, but I think most would agree that it is not likely. Maybe you can search the internet for experiences with the same computer model.

Hi ddean-ieee,

Thanks for including the attached files. Could you also include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires
that you first test it against their newer driver code.

To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built
packages for the driver and its new dependencies.

So you have a couple options:

 1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from:
     https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive

 -or-

 2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).
     See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs

Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your
findings.

P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow
these directions to do so:

Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
