[Jaunty] Virtual terminal video is corrupt

OS: Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 alpha with all current updates
PC: ThinkPad T61p 6457-7WU

The virtual terminals (CTRL-ALT-F<x>) are corrupt. No text at all, just jumbled pixels.

This has been tried with both nv and nvidia 177 drivers, after reviewing Bug 42974 and Bug 228706.
