Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After upgrading to Interpid, video playback no longer works with compiz enabled on my TravelMate 660 with Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME/PM/GMV. Whenever I move a window the video goes black, and the same happens when entering fullscreen. The problem occurs with any videoplayer when X11/Xshm/Xv is enabled. This used to work on Hardy.

I would just like to add that this problem also occurs in Jaunty final.

this happens also when enabling metacity compositing. it's been happening to me since gutsy. it appears to be an issue with the compositing extension, which is quite problematic, since it precludes users of this chipset from using apps that require compositing.

[This is an automatic notification.]

A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.

This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.

Would you mind testing Karmic Alpha-2 and seeing if it is still a
problem? CD ISO images are available here:

  http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If the issue can still be reproduced on karmic, please report here with
your findings, and attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from your test, and we will
be able to forward the bug upstream.

Otherwise, if the bug no longer exists in Karmic, let us know that as
well.

In the off chance you encounter different bugs while attempting to test
Karmic, please report those as new bug reports.

Tried the alpha livecd. it works even worse. Haven't had the time to do more than testing with gstreamer-properties, but now the entire window flickers between the old behaviour and disappearing completely. Even the window decoration is missing most of the time. Moving makes it appears (only sometimes and it requires either to guess where the titlebar is or draging with alt), but as soon as anything else is moved, it disappears.
I will post more details once I have the time to test more. Any requests?

In order to upstream this, I'd need a full set of debug files from the person who has verified the problem on karmic. So I need either for Baard to test karmic, or for you to provide the full set of files that Baard did. I can't mix your verification with his files, since the two of you may have differences in your hardware and setup.

Tried installing Karmic alpha 2 today. Unfortunately I was not able to reproduce the problem, since the intel driver failed to provide Xv. I will file a separate bug for this.

That´s strange. I´m quite certain there was xv when I tested the alpha 2 livecd.
Just tried the alpha 3 livecd and there was no xv like Baard experienced.
It appears that it´s a problem with the drivers not supporting this older chipset anymore.
One strange effect I noticed, which didn´t work on older versions or distributions is that the console and splash screen were using the native 1280x800 resolution of the integrated panel.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

Ok, I'll reopen the bug when I can test the newest build. Which tests should I do? How do I reopen a Bug?

I am also experiencing difficulties that sound very similar to this problem. I just got an Acer laptop,
Travelmate 2300, and installed jaunty Ubuntu on it, latest release, the standard CD distribution.
The video has problems. Various windows and rectangular areas of the screen break up into
diagonal lines often. It looks like a TV that has lost horizontal sync. The area can often be
fixed by clicking on it, or on the window's top, or by swiping another good window over the
affected window, causing the repainting of the afflicted window.
I would submit "full debug info" if I knew what that meant, and how to get it.
