gedit freezes when opening big text file

Bug Description

I tried to open a big text file (42 MB) with gedit, but it freezes. I have 512 MB RAM said to be enough for Ubuntu 8.10.

Command more works! I attach what the file contain -- perhaps the many <?> causes the problem? This is a Hungarian text.

When I try to open it with gedit, it starts and becomes gray, the hdd is working only. Does it perhaps analyse the WHOLE file for the encoding?

Yes, 512MB is sufficient for running Ubuntu, but I think you're probably going to struggle with Gedit on files this size. When you try to open it, could you please post the output of :

free -m

Your machine is already swapping quite heavily even without gedit, so I don't think that there is any bug with gedit here. You just don't have enough RAM to open that large file.
