thanks for your report, may you tell us a few easy steps in order to reproduce that behavior? pressing enter here on the To field of the compose window doesn't makes any reaction, where did that happen in which part of evolution? may you take an screenshot of what you're seeing? thanks.

In the ;To' area I type any name. for example sophie
In the past when the full address appeared I could hit enter and the full address was filled in in the To area. But now I get something like this: "Jansen, Sophie" <sophie., <email address hidden>>
Strange thing is, that when I copy paste this to firefox, I get this: "Jansen, Sophie" <sophie.>, <email address hidden>>
Note the extra > here.

Well not from me. I still have this annoying problem with evolution. Autofill just places a comma space somewehere in the middle of an e-mail address.

the issue is similar to http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=558478, could you give details on the email and name used in the addressbook?

Bart (ahverbeek) wrote :

Example:
name in Evolution address book: Jansen, Sophie
Save as field in evolution: Jansen, Sophie
e-mail: <email address hidden>
e-mail: <email address hidden>

The work address gives the problem. If I type 'sophie'
'.<email address hidden>' appears behind the cursor.
If I then enter on the keyboard, I get the following:
"jansen, Sophie" <sophie.>, <email address hidden>>

On other addresses an enter on the keyboard will give:
jansen, sophie (underlined).

I have the same problem with evolution with one particular address:

Mike Harris <email address hidden>.

I found that when I type "mharr" and get the autocompletion suggestions, there are two (because I have 2 different email addresses for this person). If I hit the down arrow to select the email address I want, and then hit enter, the email address is correctly entered. If I just try to hit enter, I get the comma-separated email address similar to what is described above.

In order to replicate this but, you must:

1. Start a NEW email from evolution. If you don't do it on the first time, it won't happen.
2. Click the and recipient field (TO, CC, BCC)
3. Type the part of the email address just before the @ symbol
4. Let the autocomplete suggestion appear after your cursor
5. Hit TAB or ENTER

If you don't see it, you need to CLOSE the email and then open a new one again.

Once you do these steps, it will happen. I promise. It is very annoying.

I just realized the original bug was reported for 8.10. It is definitely occuring in 9.04 as well.

I have this problem with 9.04 on two different machines.
1. I select New, Compose Message opens with cursor in To field.
2. Type "ybo" and autofill suggests "<email address hidden>"
3. Hit Enter and autofill inserts "YVONNE BOWZ <ybowz@domain, iwant.com>"
4. If I copy and past the autofill insert it pastes as: "YVONNE BOWZ <ybowz@domain>, iwant.com>" (note extra >)
5. If I delete the erroneous suggestion and try again it works properly

I did not have this behavior with 8.10. 9.04 was installed clean and not as an update to 8.10.
Address book is sync'd using syncevolution to scheduleworld.

I stand corrected. In bug report 405296 (dup of this one), I stated that the problem seemed limited to local address book and could not recreate it on LDAP sourced addresses. That is not accurate, I can recreate it using LDAP it just happens far less frequently (for some reason) so it requires multiple attempts before it happens.

Any news on this bug? I am having it on two computers. Both 9.04.

Composing a new email, click in the To field, start typing the address, it autoflls the correct name, I press Tab key and it puts in garbage in the address making it not send until corrected. Example below:

Jay Sample <jsample@s>, bcglobal.net>

It should autofill:

Jay Sample <email address hidden>

This affects me to, but only if I send a link from firefox does it break the auto complete adress like stated here. If I open evolution externally and use the auto complete to fill the 'to' field it fills it correctly. This may have something to do with the way evolution is parsing the command line options for new mail from other applications, because this is the only time I notice this problem. I am on Ubuntu 9.04 and Evolution 2.26.1.

I've just started seeing this problem a few weeks ago, even though I've been using Evolution for several years, and have been on 9.04 for a while (waiting a month or two to go to 9.10).

Since I just started seeing this issue, it's possible that it won't occur in every installation or in a test environment. It may be some kind of corruption somewhere in the data pile. That said, once it starts happening it's 100% consistent - and thus very annoying. Since I'm going to be upgrading to 9.10 soon, I'm thinking of doing a complete archive of my Evolution data, then deleted the databases before the upgrade to get a completely fresh install and starting point.

I just started seeing this behavior in the last few months in 9.10. Used Evo for years and never seen this before. I've created a screencast illustrating the problem, but since it potentially contains sensitive-ish information I'd rather not post it on the open internet. If a dev is interested in looking at it let me know, and I will send it to you.

Thanks!

QuentinHartman (qhartman) wrote :

Ok, I re-recorded the screencast w/o the extra information and attached it.

I type the first three letters of the email address, the auto-complete pops up and I hit <TAB>. Note the comma incorrectly inserted. In most cases, this results in email getting erroneously sent to someone who should not get it because the rest of the email address ends up getting interpolated by the mail server.

I clear it out though, and then type "jlm" and hit <TAB>, and it works correctly the second time. This is repeatable with this address every time I open a new message. Where precisely the comma gets inserted seems to depend on how quickly I hit <TAB>. If I wait a few moments, it will sometimes be inserted later, in the middle of his surname.

I've noticed this with a couple other recipients, but this one is repeatable every time. I have these contacts stored in the Ubuntu One couchDB. In fact, I only recall seeing this problem after I started using that.

Let me know if there is more I can do!

This is exactly the behavior I have experienced and it is just as reproducible as described in comment #21 (nice job). I can recreate it with the local address book or with an LDAP source.

Is there still no solution for this irritating behaviour of Evolution? I do not use the couchdb/ubuntu one contacts. So in my case it has nothing to do with that. It happens with almost every address in my personal address book.

I still have broken email addresses in evolution when I hit enter. This seems to occur when there are multiple possible email addresses that could be filled in. If I use the down arrow to highlight one of the addresses, and then hit enter, the email address is rendered properly.

I had the similar problem. I just went to Edit -> Preferences -> Contacts and then removed the tick mark from the 'Always Show the Address of autocompleted contact'. It seems the problem has been solved for now.
Please see if it works.

I'm still getting this annoying bug on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, nearly a year past the last post. Why would it take THIS long to get a fix into Ubuntu? Do I really have to switch to Thunderbird, just to be able to enter email addresses without them being torn up by the autofill? Christ, is it any wonder people say Linux isn't ready for prime time? This issue has been running for almost 3 years now!
