firefox vanishes when using the mouse wheel

Using Kubuntu 8.10, Firefox often vanishes completely if I use the mouse wheel to scroll the page up or down.

This seems to happen most when the page has not finished rendering/repainting (perhaps the focus has moved onto the tab bar or menu bar ?)

I have quite a slow video card on this laptop - it's a "ATI RV250 Mobility FireGL 9000" from 4 years ago, and it is using the slower OpenSource drivers.
