Thanks for the report.

Can you reproduce this on any other systems apart from your VAIO?

I thik my laptop works very similar to FS215.

From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportMachinesLaptopsSony

Ubuntu Release: Breezy
Sony Vaio VGN-FS215E

Fn keys don't work

Everything works fine so far (except sony_pi driver). Little trick for the sound: You need to click on the sound applet, choose preferences, select the Realtek ALC260 device and the volume track in order to enable it. Haven't tested suspend/hibernate.

I can see this on every machine I've installed/upgraded since some time. This has maybe something to do with amixer/alsa.

The same for Ubuntu Dapper Flight 4

This is appearing in several places, it's to do with routeing on the RealTek HDA chips and I think something was fixed in the kernel, but I can't find the canonical bug number.

On installing Dapper Flight 6, in order to get sound from my PC speakers on a Sony Vaio TX650P, I must open gnome-volume-manager, enter 'File'->'Change Device'->'Realtek ALC260 (OSS Mixer)' and increase the Volume slider which is set at minimum. Prior to this, no sound can be heard.

Also, the volume applet defaults to Headphone, but the pc speaker volume is controlled by PCM. This issue is much less important than setting the volume correctly, IMO.

The device is the HDA/RealTek.

Hi, in the future please use the "Add Attachment" link in the left bar for attaching info instead of placing it in comments. Thanks.

This issue has been resolved with the latest upload of alsa-utils, which unmutes the 'Front' element and sets it to a sane default (which seems to be required for many HDA codecs).

alsa-utils (1.0.10-1ubuntu9) dapper; urgency=low

  * debian/init: Unmute 'Front' element for HDA Intel (hda-intel), and
unmute 'Analog Front' element for SB Live 7.1/24-bit (ca0106).
